Is this gold jewelry price fair in the UAE?
Dubai's Gold Souq is one of the most competitive jewelry markets in the world, and that is exactly why the price you are quoted deserves checking: competition here is fought on the making charge, which shops rarely volunteer as a separate number. Enter your weight, karat and price, and this page removes the 5% VAT and the gold value to show what the workmanship is actually costing you.
Is this gold jewelry worth the price?
Enter what you have been quoted. Serafa works out what the gold in the piece is actually worth, what making charge that price implies once tax is taken off, and how both compare with what shops in your market typically charge.
AED
5% VAT, and why it changes the maths
The UAE introduced VAT at 5% in January 2018, and gold jewelry is taxed at that standard rate on the full sale price, making charge included. Ticket prices in the souq and the malls almost always already contain it. That means the common shortcut — subtract the gold value from the price and call the rest the making charge — overstates the workmanship, because it charges you the VAT on your own gold a second time. On a 9,800 dirham ticket with 8,050 of gold in it, the naive answer is 1,750 and the correct one is about 1,283.
Investment bullion is treated differently from jewelry
Investment-grade gold — bullion of at least 99% purity that is tradable on a recognised global market — is VAT zero-rated under UAE Cabinet decision. A crafted piece bought for wear is not. This is one of the clearest cases anywhere of the same metal being taxed differently depending on what has been done to it, and it is why a bar and a bangle of identical weight can carry noticeably different prices.
Both 21K and 22K are normal here
The UAE serves two large buying communities with different conventions, so both karats are standard rather than one being an exception. 21K (875) follows Khaleeji practice; 22K (916) is what South Asian buyers expect, and Deira's souq stocks it accordingly. 18K dominates the branded and diamond-set end of the market. Always confirm which you are being shown before comparing prices — a 22K piece holds 4.2% more gold per gram than a 21K one.
Souq and mall are different markets
Making charges vary more within the UAE than they do between some countries. The Gold Souq's independent retailers compete directly on workmanship fees; branded chains in the malls price partly on design, service and guarantee, and their charges sit correspondingly higher. Neither is wrong — but comparing a mall quote against a souq quote without knowing the making charge on each is comparing two different products.
Frequently asked questions
Is gold subject to VAT in the UAE?
Yes — 5% applies to gold jewelry, in effect since January 2018, on the full sale price including the making charge. Investment-grade bullion of at least 99% purity that is tradable on a recognised global market is zero-rated, so bars and coins bought purely for their metal value are treated differently from a crafted piece.
Does the price in the Dubai Gold Souq include VAT?
Almost always, yes. Quoted retail prices are tax-inclusive. That is why this page defaults to treating your entered price as including tax, and removes it before working out the making charge — leave that setting on unless you have a pre-tax quote in writing.
How much should making charges be in Dubai?
It depends heavily on the piece and on where you are buying. Serafa publishes an estimated range for the UAE market and labels it as an estimate; a plain machine-made chain sits at the bottom of it and a hand-worked or branded piece well above. The useful move is to ask each shop for the making charge as a number and compare those, rather than comparing tickets.
