Frequently Asked Questions
Karat measures how many parts out of 24 are pure gold. 24K is 100% (999.9 fine) gold; 22K is 22/24 = 91.67% gold; 18K is 18/24 = 75% gold. The rest is alloy metal (usually copper, silver, or zinc) added for durability and color.
Divide the karat by 24: 22K ÷ 24 = 0.9167 (91.67%), stamped as fineness 916 or 917. 18K ÷ 24 = 0.75 (75%), stamped as 750. 14K ÷ 24 = 0.583 (58.3%), stamped as 585. This calculator does the conversion automatically.
Because only 91.67% of a 22K piece is actual gold — the rest is alloy with negligible resale value. A 10-gram 22K item contains 9.167 grams of pure gold, versus 10 grams in a 24K item of the same weight, so its metal value is proportionally lower.
24K is the purest and best for storing value (bars, some coins) but is too soft for everyday jewelry. 22K and 21K are common jewelry standards in the Gulf and South Asia, balancing purity with wearability. 18K and 14K are more common in Western jewelry — harder-wearing and often cheaper per gram, since more of the weight is alloy.
Value = weight in grams × karat fineness (as a fraction of 24K) × the live spot price per gram. This is the pure-metal value only — it doesn't include making charges, retailer markup, or any buy/sell spread.
