Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between nominal and real gold return?

Nominal return is the raw price change of your gold — what you'd see on a receipt. Real return subtracts the effect of inflation over your holding period, showing whether you actually gained purchasing power or just kept pace with (or fell behind) rising prices.

How is annualized return (CAGR) calculated?

CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) converts your total return over the holding period into an equivalent constant yearly rate: ((sell price / purchase price) ^ (365 / days held) − 1) × 100. It lets you compare investments held for different lengths of time.

Where does the inflation data come from?

Cumulative inflation is based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) data from the World Bank for the selected country. It reflects the actual change in the general price level between your purchase and sale dates.

Can gold show a nominal gain but a real loss?

Yes. If gold's price rose 10% over a period where inflation ran at 15%, you made money nominally but lost purchasing power in real terms — the verdict sentence above the chart makes this explicit.

Where does the historical purchase price come from?

From the recorded 24K market close for the date you select, converted to your currency and adjusted for your karat. The calculator names the exact market day it used — including when the market was closed and the previous close was used instead — and tells you when no data exists for that date rather than substituting today's price.
