How this calculator works

This calculator uses official Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for United States (USD), sourced from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The formula is:

Adjusted Amount = Original Amount × (CPI End Year / CPI Start Year)

CPI measures the average change in prices paid by consumers for goods and services over time. A higher CPI means money buys less — that's inflation eroding purchasing power.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is purchasing power?

Purchasing power is the value of a currency in terms of the goods and services that one unit of money can buy. Inflation reduces purchasing power over time — the same amount of money buys fewer goods as prices rise.

How does the inflation calculator work?

The calculator uses official Consumer Price Index (CPI) data. The formula is: Adjusted Amount = Original Amount × (CPI End Year ÷ CPI Start Year). A higher CPI means prices have risen and money buys less.

Which countries are supported?

The calculator supports the United States (USD, BLS CPI data), United Kingdom (GBP, ONS data), the European Union (EUR, Eurostat HICP data), Qatar (QAR), Saudi Arabia (SAR), the UAE (AED), Turkey (TRY), and India (INR) — the last five sourced from World Bank CPI series compiled from each country's national statistics office.

How far back does the data go?

US data goes back to 1960, UK data to 1988, and EU data to 1996. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and India data go back to 2000; UAE data goes back to 2007 — all using official government statistics.
