Is this gold jewelry price fair in Bahrain?
Bahrain doubled its VAT rate in 2022, and anyone comparing a price today against what they remember paying before then is comparing two different tax regimes. Enter your weight, karat and price and this page applies the rate that actually applies, removes it, and shows what the workmanship is costing.
Is this gold jewelry worth the price?
Enter what you have been quoted. Serafa works out what the gold in the piece is actually worth, what making charge that price implies once tax is taken off, and how both compare with what shops in your market typically charge.
BHD
10% VAT since January 2022
Bahrain introduced VAT at 5% in January 2019 and raised it to 10% on 1 January 2022. Gold jewelry is taxed at the standard rate; investment-grade gold is zero-rated, as it is elsewhere in the Gulf. The doubling is large enough to be visible on a ticket — a piece that carried 5% tax before now carries twice as much, on the same gold and the same workmanship.
Manama's gold souq and the cross-border shopper
Bahrain's Gold City and the Manama souq have long drawn buyers from across the causeway, and the arithmetic of that trip has changed twice: once when Saudi Arabia went to 15% in 2020, and again when Bahrain went to 10% in 2022. The gap is narrower than it was, which makes the making charge — not the tax — the thing worth comparing between a Manama shop and a Saudi one.
21K standard, 22K widely stocked
21K (875) is the Gulf standard and the default here; 22K (916) is common, particularly among retailers serving Bahrain's South Asian community, and 18K appears in branded and stone-set work. As everywhere, the karat determines the gold content, so it has to be established before two prices can be compared at all — a 22K piece holds 4.2% more gold per gram than a 21K one and should be priced accordingly rather than treated as simply the better option.
Investment gold is taxed differently from jewelry
Investment-grade gold is zero-rated in Bahrain, while crafted jewelry is taxed at the standard rate. That is the same distinction the UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia draw, and it matters more here than the wording suggests: a bar and a bangle of identical weight and identical purity can carry noticeably different prices, and the difference is not the metal. If you are buying to hold value rather than to wear, the tax treatment alone is worth asking about before you choose between the two.
Where the making charge sits in a Bahraini ticket
With a 10% rate applied to the whole sale, the tax on a Bahraini jewelry ticket is large enough that working backwards without removing it first materially overstates the workmanship. On a piece with 8,000 dinars-equivalent of gold in it and a 1,000 making charge, the ticket reads 9,900 and the naive subtraction says the shop is charging 1,900 for labour — nearly double the real figure. This page removes the tax first and shows it as its own line, so what is left is the workmanship and nothing else.
Frequently asked questions
What is the VAT rate on gold jewelry in Bahrain?
10%, raised from 5% on 1 January 2022, applied to the full jewelry sale including the making charge. Investment-grade gold is zero-rated. Retail prices quoted to consumers are tax-inclusive.
Is it still cheaper to buy gold in Bahrain than in Saudi Arabia?
On tax alone, yes — 10% against 15% — but the gap narrowed when Bahrain doubled its rate in 2022. Because the gold value is identical in both markets, whether a specific piece is cheaper comes down to the two shops' making charges, which is what this page is built to expose.
Was the VAT different when I bought my jewelry?
If you bought before January 2022, it was 5%. Serafa keeps superseded tax rules rather than overwriting them, so a calculation made against the older rate stays reproducible.
