Is this gold jewelry price fair in Oman?

Oman was the last GCC state to introduce VAT, in April 2021, and at 5% it sits at the lower end of the region. Enter what a shop in Muscat has quoted you and this page separates the ticket into the three parts it is actually made of: gold, workmanship, tax.

Is this gold jewelry worth the price?

Enter what you have been quoted. Serafa works out what the gold in the piece is actually worth, what making charge that price implies once tax is taken off, and how both compare with what shops in your market typically charge.

5% VAT since April 2021

Oman introduced VAT at 5% on 16 April 2021. Gold jewelry is taxed at the standard rate on the full sale price including the making charge; investment-grade gold, silver and platinum are zero-rated. Retail prices are quoted tax-inclusive, so a ticket has to have the tax removed before the workmanship charge inside it can be seen.

Muttrah Souq and the traditional trade

Muttrah Souq in Muscat remains the country's best-known gold market, alongside retailers in Ruwi and the modern malls. Omani gold jewelry has a strong traditional design tradition, and hand-worked pieces carry correspondingly higher workmanship fees than machine-made chain — a real difference in the work done, not a markup, and one reason a single 'correct' making charge does not exist.

21K is standard, and the rial is pegged

21K (875) is the default for jewelry sold in Oman, in line with the rest of the Gulf, with 22K and 18K both available and 24K sold as coins and bars rather than as ornaments. The rial is pegged to the US dollar, so the local gold price follows the international market rather than a currency move — a price quoted this morning and a price quoted this evening differ because gold moved, which is why the timestamp on the gold price behind every result on this page is shown alongside it.

Investment gold is zero-rated; jewelry is not

Oman zero-rates investment-grade gold, silver and platinum while taxing crafted jewelry at the standard 5%. The distinction is about what has been done to the metal rather than about the metal itself, which is why a bar and a bracelet of the same weight and purity can be priced differently. Worth knowing before a large purchase: if the intent is to hold value rather than to wear the piece, the tax treatment is part of the comparison and not a technicality.

What to ask for in a Muscat shop

Because Omani retail quotes are tax-inclusive, the single most useful question at the counter is what the making charge is as its own number. Everything else on the ticket is determined: the gold price is the international rate converted at a pegged currency, the weight is on the scale in front of you, and the tax is 5% of the sale. The workmanship fee is the only figure the shop sets, and it is the only one worth discussing.

Frequently asked questions

Is there VAT on gold in Oman?

Yes — 5%, in effect since 16 April 2021, on gold jewelry including the making charge. Investment-grade gold, silver and platinum are zero-rated.

Why is hand-made Omani jewelry more expensive per gram?

Because the making charge reflects the work, and hand-worked traditional pieces take far more of it than machine-made chain. The gold content is priced identically; the difference is entirely in the workmanship, which is exactly the figure this page isolates.
